How An Envelope Template Saved My Life This Year

Making punny Christmas wishes come true…

If you’ve been following along, you know I decided to DIY my Christmas cards this year. But, I’m also participating in a Christmas & Holiday Card swap with six members of a Facebook group I frequent.
One of the optional goals is to share a pun. It’s really no wonder since the group is the Crayligraphy Lettering Community…aka the Craymunity. They cray!

In my element, I love laughing, but I’m sarcastic at best. So, I dug around for some puns I could use for my cards and I found a few.

The group agreed to mail our cards by the 20th…which was today.

You’ll be happy to know, that I just made the deadline by the skin of my teeth.
But, I had some help.

The lettering on these cards has been so fun! I’ve been trying different styles and seeing how well I can control the gel pen. Sometimes I do that better than other times. But the thing that terrifies me most about card making is the envelopes!

Addressing envelopes with my handwriting?! You’re kidding, right?
I’ve been procrastinating just a bit because of that part of the process. It’s really snow laughing matter! I feel like even at my stage, I still draw letters way better than I write them!

So, I thought I’d make it a little easier on myself (and my schedule) and I ordered an envelope template.
It’s pretty easy to use…First, I set the template on the envelope.

I don’t know if there’s a way to properly place it. I just put it where I felt it would look good.
Then, I traced inside the guides with a chalk pencil.

The guides were easy to see on the Kraft paper I used (and fairly easy to erase when they’re were no longer needed). I used the larger name box for larger, faux calligraphy while the other lines were for smaller, plainer text.

I chose not to use the last line because my envelope was so small and these are largely informal.
This gadget didn’t necessarily make my handwriting any better. But it at least gave me a way to make the text appear organized and gave me consistent guidelines for the lines of the addresses. It definitely made addressing the envelopes simpler than it would’ve been otherwise. I had enough time left to ad-lib some sentiments and do some doodling for these as well.

I put a sneak peek of all six cards in my stories on IG. Have a look!

Until next time, connect with your communities and, if you can, stay HO HO Home for the holiday! 🧑🏾‍🎄
