My First Homwork Assignment

The writing is on the wall with this one...

…and the construction paper…and the chalkboard…and the white board, etc.

This piece is my submission for the current homwork assignment.
No, I did not misspell it. 😊
Homwork assignments are the brainchild of the legendary lettering artist, Lauren Hom of @homsweethom. I have been on her newsletter list ever since I signed up for a couple of her classes last year. But, I first learned about this assignment in @alanna_flowers IG story. Thank goodness, or I might’ve missed it (curse you, Gmail).

This is my first time submitting an assignment…and I chose to do this #homwork assignment because one of my personal favorite lettering artists inspired it!
Kevin Adams, of @kevinadamsdesigns is a very socially aware lettering artists who uses musical lyrics to comment on social issues. He and I tend to agree on quite a few of those issues!
For this assignment, Kevin joined with Lauren Hom to challenge participants to approach a piece the way Kevin would. I chose lyrics from the song “Wake Up Everybody” by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. It’s a no-brainer why. But, in case you missed the episode, as a teacher of color, I’m for Critical Race Theory being taught in schools (though not by classroom teachers, per se).
I had to get my assignment done early since, one, I’m a nerd…

…and, two…since I’ve returned to work, my days are a little busier again.
But, I definitely didn’t want to miss this one! I’m so excited to see the work that will come of this challenge!

I’m also super happy that Lauren is still using her platform to #amplifymelanatedvoices even after the afterparty has died down and everyone has gone home. So much respect and love… 🥰
As for you, follow the #songlyricfridays and the #Homwork2021 challenge on IG and see what you might learn…Or better yet, go do your Homwork!
