Teacher Time: Sending Messages to Students

Letters = Messages

I’m an art teacher. Often, I use whatever skills I’ve developed (or am developing) in service of the school where I teach. This was a piece in response to the shut down of school for the rest of the school year, and largely inspired by Nubia Navarro’s class on Domestika. *
The music teacher and I hosted a Zoom Listen & Draw where I shared my screen to draw with our students to a playlist he curated.

Teachers like me that are used to teaching in traditional settings have had to come up with alternative methods of delivering instruction or even just continuing to build relationships with our students who are often missing us and each other. In this time I’ve learned to use multiple software solutions for curriculum delivery from screencasting to screensharing, etc. For this, I used Reflector 3 to display myself drawing along with them in Zoom (screenshare). Then, I used the Procreate app to download the quick replay of the drawing. I added a few frames (with the school logo) and some music in LumaFusion for the video I sent to my school. It’s such a different world for teachers right now that can often require new mindsets, tools and gear to meet students where they are.

I hope they are encouraged by these messages.

*(Disclaimer: I only know a little Spanish. I normally watch the videos for the subtitles first. Then, I go back to watch what she’s doing. It’s a little extra. But, if the class is worth it, I’m in. This class was SO worth it. Lots of crazy talent on Domestika.)
