Inside An UGG Leather Etching Event: Bringing a Brand Activation to Life

Is it #UGGSEASON already?

I’m a summer girl. You know this. And last week was the first week since school started where I noticed we had a day that we didn’t reach 80 degree temperatures. That’s usually how I know the season is threatening to change and I need to get my cozy gear out before I freeze until next June.

Enter sheepskin boots.

Someone once told me that if your feet are warm, your whole body will be warm. I don’t know how true it is. But, toasty toes when it’s cold out make me a happy girl! So, I’m sure you can imagine my delight when I was contacted about customizing for the famed boot brand, Ugg.

Uggs became popular in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. I remember seeing them on all the feet of my favorite R&B artists. These days, the brand seems to be remixing their classic styles and the boots are beautiful! Their chunky profile and soft, comfortability has met thicker soles and heels, cut-outs and even lettered and patterned designs lately. But, the classics are still a winner in our hearts. This weekend, at the Ugg store at the King of Prussia Mall all of them were made even more endearing by adding a customization by yours truly!

Leather debossing Uggs, better known by the much better-sounding misnomers Ugg Engraving and Ugg Etching is a thing. Etching typically involves acid…And engraving usually doesn’t involve heat, but, I digress. Leather debossing requires a heated tool such as the wood burners used in heat foiling. However, I’ve not seen this activation happening near me until now. And I’m so happy that I got to be the artist on-site for this event!

While the weather that day was warm, walking into the Ugg store gave me the wake up call I needed. The friendly staff made sure that the earmarks of coming in from the cold were front and center with a hot coffee stand complete with delicious, cold foam creamers, the cutest cookies in the shapes of Ugg boots, and muffins stuffed to the brim with berries. I honestly had to have a chat with my foopa about the entire situation.

On the floor they had their selection of jackets, sweaters and other accessories, of course. But the reason we all love the Ugg brand—the iconic sheepskin boots—were still the center of attention. And while I know Ugg boots come in a variety of colors, seeing the wide variety of browns, tans, creams and blacks made my neutral-loving heart sing!

I loved sitting at their store window, all snug, personalizing the boots their customers bought. Passersby would stop, I’d give them a look at what I was doing, and I’d see wide grins and smiles. I’d wave and they’d wave back. Some bolted into the store to get their own! For this event, my back was toward in-store customers, which is not my usual. But, it allowed them to look over my shoulder at what I was doing, creating an even more engaging experience. I swear if you have ever done an event, these folks will make you feel like a rock star!

More importantly, when the guests look at their boots and see their design, they’ll remember it was Ugg that brought them the experience. That’s what it’s all about.

If you need live, custom leather debossing for your next event in or around the Delaware area, feel free to reach out! ☺️
