Easter Egg Engraving: A Unique and Personalized Way to Celebrate
What an eggs-elent start to spring vacation!
I’m a teacher on spring break right now. I’ve been on break since this past Friday. I’ve had a few things on my plate to do that I have put off for the first couple days…Well, all except for sleeping in. 😴 And I’m just so proud of myself that I finally moved a muscle with these engravings.
This is the time of year where all the staff feels a bit run down. But, there are still a few more months until the end of the school year. The weather gets better and the students get a little stir crazy. Truth be told, the staff may be peaking out the windows a little more longingly than usual too…So, we strap in and white-knuckle it until June. Spring break gives us a minute to relax before heading back into the gauntlet that is the end of the year activities.
In the art room, before we left, we were in the middle of our ceramics unit. My students learned how to create pinch pots-or to improve if they’ve tried their hand at it before. It’s expensive, it’s messy…and they love it.
I make an example for each of the steps for nearly every class to create a pinch pot and/or to step it up a notch, transforming a pinch pot into a monster pot, depending on the grade level. Three-dimensional projects are not my strong suit. I’ve always been more comfortable with two-dimensional projects. But, as monotonous as doing a demo in a mildly-foreign-to-me medium for each class can be, these small, clay structures are actually pretty fun too.
It’s not the projects…It’s actually the teaching schedule itself that does me in. For me, from the time I’m up until the time I get home, it’s about a 12-hour or more day.
Needless to say, when the last bus left school on Thursday, I could’ve given Forrest Gump a run for his money trying to get out of the building to go home…I’ve been resting up on the sofa, binging the rest of The Handmaid’s Tale ever since.
In fact, the only reason I even picked up an engraver this early in break was because my mil wanted me to create my daughter’s Easter basket this year...and because engraving her eggs has become a tradition since I got my first engraver.
If you’ve been around long enough, you remember these…
In fact, there’s a whole egg engraving rabbithole on IG to explore where calligraphers have been practicing their light touch on their eggs for years. You can find them by searching the tag at #eggengraving or the keyword eggengraving.
I have to admit, I’ve never attempted to engrave a raw egg. My touch isn’t always the lightest. And even though I’m sure my adult daughter with autism couldn’t care less that her eggs are engraved, I find that I enjoy the tradition that I am building with this activity. So far, I’ve tended to freehand, but I wouldn’t rule trying a worthy template out in the future. I’ve also only used the typical holiday quotes on the eggs I engrave so far. But, I imagine they could easily include whole scriptures or even funny, inside jokes. 🤔
Just then I couldn’t help picturing an egg with “Blessed be the fruit.” 😂
Lord, You know I don’t mean it-and You know You made me this way. 🙏🏾
Whatever you put on them, engraved eggs just make your holiday basket so much more unique. 🥰
I hope your Resurrection Sunday has been eggs-tra special!
