Birthday Girl - A Mini Calligraphy Haul

I’m blowing out candles and making wishes over here…

My birthday fell on a Magic Monday this past week and I was delighted by all the well wishes from staff and students, including the first batch of kindergarteners we welcomed into the school at the start of the year. The little people nearly knocked me into the floor with a group bear hug. Can you say adorable?

My family also showed me so much love that, even though my two gifts to myself haven’t arrived yet, it was likely the best birthday I’ve ever had. 🥰

But, about those two gifts…

I learned in years past never to expect for the people in your life to gift you what you want. Most of us get our loved ones and friends the things we want to get them…not necessarily what they say they want (although my husband has been doing a very good job lately). To avoid disappointment, I usually just gift myself! You may have noticed…

The only problem this year is, though I ordered with plenty of time, neither gift got here in time for my birthday.

Guess the joke was on me. 😂

Anyway. Stuff happens. 🤷🏾‍♀️

One of the items is a repeat. I got another adjustable hourglass holder because I like it so much for practice. The holder is from Paper and Ink Arts and it’s my favorite practice pen. At the time I ordered, they had run out and needed to restock. But, it’s on the way.

I have one at home. But, I’m afraid to carry it because I don’t want to damage it in my backpack. Plus, I always want one ready at my desk just in case I get a little time to be in my room. So, I got another along with some protectors for my nibs (since it’s not like a Moblique where you can store the nib in the shaft of the pen ).If the pen gets banged up, I’ll try not to notice so much.

For their part, Mobliques are very lightweight and do a nice job too. I use them most during the day at work. If my students ask to try them, I won’t pain over it because of the price point. But, I may just give them an old nib. 😬 For evening practice, I use the adjustable hourglass oblique.

The other item is a new to me ink well by Creative Ink Holders. It’s the perfect color grey and it appears as though it will tilt at any angle for loading my nibs with ink. I’ve tried a number of ink holders and aside from the dinky dips and the glass jars that sit atop my ink stirrers, I haven’t had a great solution for just regular practice ink. I’ve had one or two ink well solutions that tilt and they either got turned over because they were too light., or the ink always looks like it’s on too much of an angle and threatens to spill all over my desk. No bueno. So, I’m hoping this inkwell does the trick…especially since I had to wait for it to come from Russia! Honestly, my inner shopper could barely take the wait…and, besides, it’s my birthday.

Meh. It has already been over 40 years since I even picked up a pointed pen. I guess a few more days won’t kill me.

Yup. That part! 😂
